LIANG STAYS COOL IN THE HEAT TO CLAIM HIS FIRST ASIAN AND EUROPEAN TOUR TITLE

The final day of the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters 2007 is over and what an exciting climax it was.

The title has been claimed by Liang Wen-Chong of China who won in a sudden-death play-off against Malaysia’s Iain Steel after they tied at 11-under. Steel shot a 71 for the day in the penultimate group and had to wait patiently as Liang came in with a 73 in the final flight.

Liang took the first drive in the 18th hole decider and placed it sweetly in the centre of the fairway, putting the pressure onto his opponent. Steel then drove into the water and had to take a penalty shot which ultimately handed the trophy to 29 year-old Liang.

The crowd have witnessed some amazing play over the four days at Laguna. Several top players failed to perform and missed the cut, but a host of new faces came to the fore and gave us an exciting and unpredictable final day which made for a memorable occasion for all.

Liang’s maiden win on the Asian Tour earns him a fortune of US$183,330 and he also gains his card for the second largest tour in the world, the European Tour.

Iain Steel takes second place and England’s Simon Dyson produced a round of 71 to finish third.
