TOP STARS NOT ON SONG IN SINGAPORE BUT ASIANS ON FORM

The qualifying rounds are over and the field has been cut from 204 to 71.

The third round will tee-off tomorrow on the Masters Course at 8:00am with Jyoti Randhawa of Indian in top spot setting out onto the course at 12:05pm.

“It was really windy today and it was a tough scoring day….but I am happy with the way I played. You miss some, you get some and as long as you do that, I am pretty happy with how it went,” commented Randhawa after completing his round.

Day 2 witnessed several highs and lows as many of the big fish struggled but smaller minnows fired from all cylinders.

The stronger wind made the Classic Course more challenging today. Many who had performed well on the Classic Course yesterday, took that confidence over to the Masters, notably Barry Hume who is in second place and Iain Steel in third with nine-under par.

For international stars Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and last week’s winner at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Phuket Anton Haig; their journey at the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters has come to a premature end. Much was expected of Haig after his stellar display a week ago but the 20 year old has had a lot of adapting to do this week as he has been pushed into the limelight so suddenly.

Darren Clarke ended the two days on three-over par; David Howell ended on even par; while Lee Westwood, Paul Lawrie and Ian Woosnam were all tied on 1-under which was not quite up to scratch to make the cut.

2005 Champion and 2006 runner-up Nick Dougherty has made it through to the final stages after shooting a 72 on the Classic Course. Singapore’s very own Mardan Mamat also makes it through on three-under after a disappointing one-over for the day.

Mamat said: “It was a tough day at the office. I just had a lapse in concentration today but I am trying not to pressure myself too much, I just want to play shot by shot.”

The final two days on the Masters Course tee-off at 8:00am with players going out in threes. Ones to watch will certainly be the top-three on the leader board but others such as Thongchai Jaidee (seven-under), Jean Van de Velde (five-under) and Frankie Minoza (four-under) could all put up a serious challenge for the title at the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters 2007. The crowds at Laguna will certainly be entertained and the locals have their hero Mamat to support and cheer.
